Race to the Top

Race to the Top

What is the national Race to the Top competition?

Awards in Race to the Top went to States that are leading the way with ambitious yet achievable plans for implementing coherent, compelling, and comprehensive education reform. Race to the Top winners will help trail-blaze effective reforms and provide examples for States and local school districts throughout the country to follow as they too are hard at work on reforms that can transform our schools for decades to come.

How will students benefit from Race to the Top?

Student success is at the center of Ohio’s work and four goals detail the benefit to students across the state. Ohio will:

  • Improve the graduation rate by 0.5% a year.
  • Reduce graduation rate gaps by 50% between underrepresented and majority students in participating districts and schools.
  • Reduce performance gaps by 50% on national and state-wide assessments between underrepresented and majority students in participating districts and schools.
  • Reduce the gap between Ohio and the best performing states in the nation by 50% on reading and mathematics proficiency as measured by national assessments.

Race to the Top Vision: How will we be different in 2014 as a result of our RttT strategy?

As a "Race to The Top" recipient we envision our district moving beyond a concentration of basic competency in core subjects to promoting understanding of academic content at a much higher level by weaving 21st century interdisciplinary themes into core subjects at entry level. By the year 2014 based on our RttT strategies, our comprehensive research-based practices in the delivery and instructional planning of our core curriculum and alignment system will support all academic and developmental domains and provide multiple ways to engage students in developing key concepts and skills. With this system we will implement curriculum that focuses on helping students understand how to approach learning, provide opportunities that support their learning and development in these very formative years of K-2 and prepare them with the skills that they need to be successful in Grade 3 through grade twelve.
